Process
Two-Stage Removal for Tough Papers
- Step 1
Peel the Face
The vinyl or fabric face is peeled away dry where it will release.
- Step 2
Score the Backing
Remaining backing is scored so moisture reaches the paste.
- Step 3
Soften
Warm water, steam or a softener is applied and left to work.
- Step 4
Lift and Wash
Backing is lifted flat and the wall washed clean.
Tough Papers, Careful Removal
Vinyl papers often split into two layers. The face peels off and leaves a paper backing that must be soaked and scraped. Leaving the backing on and painting over it causes bubbles.
Grasscloth and fabric papers absorb water unevenly. Steam works best, applied section by section so it does not run down the wall.
